Somboon Legacy Foundation

I am in my final few days after nearly a month of volunteering at Somboon Legacy Foundation near Kanchanaburi, Thailand. The foundation is a completely hands-off ethical elephant sanctuary that focuses on giving retired elephants a safe and peaceful life, while also educating visitors about responsible tourism.

At the sanctuary there are four elephants, all between 60 and 95 years old. Spending time with them has been pretty special. They each have their own personalities and routines, and it’s been amazing to watch them up close - whether it’s how much they enjoy their food, how they interact with each other, or just the quiet moments when they’re left to roam.

My volunteering has been a mix of jobs. I’ve led tours in English and French, explaining the foundation’s work and showing visitors around. I’ve also done plenty of behind-the-scenes tasks - preparing food, helping to make sure tours run smoothly, and whatever else was needed on the day.

The group of volunteers has been great too. People have come from all over the world, and it’s been fun to share the experience together. We usually had two days off a week, which have been spent with weekend meals at a nearby Italian restaurant, nights out in Kanchanaburi for drinks and karaoke, and lazy afternoons by the pool at the resort where the sanctuary is based.

The month has flown by, and it’s hard to believe I’ll be in the UK in just a few weeks. Volunteering here has been a really good way to end my time in Asia, and I’m grateful for the chance to be part of the work the foundation is doing.

Looking forward to seeing everyone soon! Xoxo
