Sri Lanka time!!

I spent two weeks in Sri Lanka, and it turned out to be one of the best parts of my trip. At first, I wasn’t that excited to go. After being with the family, I kind of felt ready to go home but my mind quickly changed once I got there. I had some great experiences and met some really good people along the way.

I arrived in Colombo just before midnight and stayed in an airport hostel for the night before catching a bus to Dambulla the next morning. I’d been warned about how chaotic the local buses can be, but the one I took had AC and was actually pretty comfortable!

From Dambulla, I went to Sigiriya and stayed at Roy’s Villas, a hostel that so many people had recommended. It lived up to the hype. The place was lovely, the staff organised activities and family dinners, and it felt like an easy place to meet other travellers.

While I was in Sigiriya, I did the following activities:

• Went on safari in Minneriya National Park, where we saw about 150 wild elephants.

• Visited the Golden Temple of Dambulla.

• Hiked up Lion’s Rock for sunset.

• Tried a cooking class and did yoga at the hostel.

All of it was great, and being around such a nice group of people made me feel a lot happier about being there.

After Sigiriya, I went to Kandy. To be honest, it wasn’t my favourite. I stayed in a tiny hostel that was basically just a guy’s house, and I was the only guest, which made things a bit uncomfortable. I did a full-day tour, which was fine, but looking back I probably would’ve skipped Kandy altogether.

From there, I took the famous train from Kandy to Ella. I managed to get tickets on the day by showing up early at the station, though I know plenty of people who weren’t as lucky. The journey itself was stunning - rolling hills, tea plantations and beautiful views. I spent most of it reading my book and staring out the window.
